cooperation, as a way of implementing the united nations convention on biological diversity in Ghana

This site has been established in line with Art. 18 of the Convention on Biological Diversity, which enjoins Parties to promote international technical and scientific cooperation in the field of conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.

Among the key internationals organizations which have assisted Ghana in this direction are:

internal organizations

• Belgian Clearing-House Mechanism: Has provided training in webmastership to Ghana and has offered to host Ghana's website on their server until Ghana acquires the necessary capacity to host it on her own.
• Global Environmental Facility (GEF): The GEF has supported Ghana carry out five national projects. For example, the Natural Resource Management Project and the Coastal Wetlands Management Project. It has also supported a number regional projects which Ghana has benefited from.
• The World Conservation Union (IUCN): The IUCN has supported a number of publications, especially on biodiversity and tourism in Ghana.
• UNEP-WCMC: Has been assisting in executing projects on conservation of biological resources in the country. Some of the projects are currently on-going. A number of them has been provided in the website of the UNEP-WCMC.
  For example, the Ghana Biodiversity Data Management Project.  

government agencies

As the National Focal Point for the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Ministry of Environment and Science is mandated to implement the convention in Ghana. This responsibility is performed in collaboration with other sector Ministries. These are: 

• The Forestry Commission-Ghana-responsible for Ghana's Game and Wildlife and Timber Resources
• Ministry of Food and Agriculture-responsible for Ghana's agricultural biological diversity
• Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development-responsible for implementation of the convention at the district level 
• Ministry of Trade and Industry-controls the commercialization of Ghana's biological resources and their products.
• Ministry of justice-responsible for legislations in Ghana 

non-governmental organizations

• Conservation International-Ghana-assisted the Ministry of Environment and Science Develop the "National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan" and also is executing a number of conservation projects in  the country
• Ghana Wildlife Society:- is executing a number of conservation projects in the country; for example the  "Amansuri Conservation and Integration Development Project" and the Afadjato Community Forest Conservation Project. The Society recently donated an amount of ¢5 Million (about € 500) in support of a "National Species Extinction Forum" which the National Biodiversity Committee wants to organize.   
• Friends of the Earth-Ghana: credited for executing a project on conservation of biodiversity in lake Bosumtwe. This is a natural  lake believed to have been created by the impact of a meteorite.
